Thank you for your interest in joining the National Young Farmers Coalition Board of Directors!
The National Young Farmers Coalition (Young Farmers) represents, mobilizes, and engages young farmers to ensure their success. Since our founding in 2010, we have grown our grassroots network to over 200,000 individuals and partner organizations. We give young farmers tools to become leaders in their communities, building an effective political voice at the local, state, and national level. Together, we tackle the most critical structural and economic barriers that prevent motivated young people from starting and growing successful farm businesses—including access to affordable farmland, student debt, climate change, healthcare, racial inequities, and more. We have won historic investments in beginning farmer training, outreach to farmers of color, and farmland conservation. Our advocacy for a USDA Farm Service Agency microloan resulted in a loan program in every county that has served more than 30,000 farmers.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
In accordance with our By Laws, we maintain a majority farmer board of directors with a total membership of 7 to 15 volunteer board members. More detailed Board Job Descriptions can be found here. We seek to preserve majority BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) board membership, are working towards filling the gaps to represent all regions of the United States and bring in needed skill areas, particularly an individual with finance/investment expertise. We aim to elect at least 2 new board members and up to 5 total new members by December 2024. For priority consideration, please submit your application by September 15, 2024. Applications will be reviewed and interviews scheduled on a rolling basis until available seats are filled.
Terms of Board Membership include the following requirements: Serve a two-year term, attend quarterly virtual Board meetings, serve on a committee, attend in-person Annual 2-day Board Retreat (in January/February, cost covered as needed), participate in Board education events (such as Racial Equity training), maintain Young Farmers membership (open to farmers and advocates), encourage participation in at least one networking or fundraising event, and uphold the Young Farmers Theory of Change. If you join the Board, you agree that you can provide at least 2-4 hours a month (up to 10 hours per month during major strategic moments) in attendance to Board and Committee meetings. Regular email communication, participation in additional tasks and Committee work between meetings are needed throughout the year.
